Locum Anaesthetists
Eligible fields of practice
To be eligible to work as a locum for the Rural Locum Assistance Program (Rural LAP) and receive the additional allowances associated with the program, you must be a specialist or general practice (GP) anaesthetist and meet the Rural LAP eligibility criteria.
How our program works
Submit your expression of interest, and our team will guide you through our application process to become a Rural LAP health service locum. Once credentialed, we will contact you when suitable opportunities are available. We will put you forward for positions you agree to apply for and support you throughout your placement if you are successful.
While on placement, you’ll receive an hourly wage plus superannuation, and an incentive of a $100 travel allowance. We also arrange and pay for your travel and accommodation.

Eligibility criteria
Qualifications
An anaesthetist must have the following qualifications to be eligible to apply for the locum register:
- Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or international equivalent
- current unrestricted registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Specialist Anaesthetists must also have:
- evidence of Fellowship with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA)
- evidence of participating in an accredited CPD program as an anaesthetist.
GP Anaesthetists must also have:
- General Practitioner license or registration
- undergone appropriate training endorsed by the JCCA
- evidence of Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM).
Entitlement to work in Australia
In addition to practising one of the eligible positions, you must:
- be legally entitled to work in Australia
- have current, unrestricted professional registration in your field of practice.
Minimum credentials
Rural LAP health service locums must also meet the established minimum credentials.
