Discover the adventure of becoming a Rural LAP locum

Meet Stephanie Pierce, a Registered Nurse from New Zealand who joined Rural LAP over a year ago. Since joining the program, Stephanie has travelled to placements across Queensland, Tasmania, and South Australia, with Tasmania stealing her heart as it felt like a home away from home.

Rural LAP offers a range of placement options, attracting nurses like Stephanie who seek a better work-life balance while delivering quality healthcare to rural and remote communities. Many locums, including Stephanie, are drawn to the program through word-of-mouth recommendations from fellow healthcare professionals who have raved about their experiences.

Stephanie emphasises the invaluable support provided by Rural LAP throughout her locum journey. Each locum is assigned a dedicated Program Officer who acts as a supportive guide every step of the way, ensuring a seamless transition into new locations and environments. From arranging travel to handling accommodation logistics, Rural LAP alleviates the stress of getting to placements, allowing locums to focus solely on their vital role in healthcare delivery.

Reflecting on her experiences, Stephanie fondly recalls her time at the May Shaw Health Centre in Tasmania, where she truly discovered her passion for aged care amongst a welcoming team.

Her most recent placement in Killarney, Queensland, surrounded by farms and waterfalls offered Stephanie the opportunity to immerse herself in the community, and, despite being away from home for extended periods, Stephanie acknowledges the rewards of locum work, from building new relationships to embracing new hobbies and being immersed into the local community.

For those contemplating locum work, Stephanie offers a positive endorsement: “Do it! Locum work is highly rewarding. If you approach it with a friendly, team-oriented, open-minded, and hardworking attitude, you will be welcomed with open arms anywhere you go.”
