Peter Ryan’s journey in the world of pharmacy has taken him from the bustling streets of the capital cities to the remote corners of Australia’s Outback. With over four decades of experience under his belt, including 27 years as a pharmacy owner, Peter’s career has seen him return to work as a locum pharmacist.

In his early days, Peter was part of The Minder Locum Service in Adelaide with three friends, providing essential support to pharmacies in need. Fast forward to the present, and Peter finds himself once again embracing the role of a locum pharmacist, having joined the Rural Locum Assistance Program (Rural LAP) in 2018.

Reflecting on his extensive career, Peter emphasises the importance of locum support, a service he himself has relied on while managing pharmacies in Outback NSW and the Gold Coast. “I wanted to give something back to the people in the bush,” Peter shares, highlighting his connection with rural communities. “I reckon I understand them and speak their language.”

One of the aspects Peter loves most about his locum work is the opportunity to immerse himself in new environments and cultures. Recently, he completed a placement in Bruny Island, Tasmania, where he not only provided vital pharmacy services but also indulged in his passion for photography. Despite the challenges of working solo and addressing a backlog of patients, Peter found comfort in the warm reception from the locals, who appreciated his dedication to travelling from Queensland to assist their community.

Throughout his six years with Rural LAP, Peter’s most fulfilling placements have brought him back to his hometown of Broken Hill. Reconnecting with familiar faces and old friends has been a source of immense joy for him, affirming the impact of his work in these communities. “Being told that people wish you were still here is great for the ego,” Peter admits with a smile.

For Peter, locum work has been a fulfilling chapter after relinquishing pharmacy ownership. Beyond the professional gratification, he values the opportunity to give back to rural and remote communities while travelling the diverse landscapes of Australia. As he reflects on his journey, Peter leaves aspiring locum pharmacists with a simple yet powerful piece of advice: “If you are contemplating it, just do it.”
