Discover a rewarding new path

“It is such a rewarding way to do the work I love while seeing some of this great big beautiful country.” – Linda Cornwall, Personal Care Worker

For many healthcare professionals, the idea of working as a locum can feel like stepping into the unknown. But for Linda Cornwall, a dedicated Personal Care Worker and proud Rural LAP locum of two years, it has been a deeply rewarding journey, filled with connection, adventure and personal growth.

A safe and exciting way to explore

Linda first joined Rural LAP in search of a new work experience.

“I was looking for a new work experience and Rural LAP sounded interesting and a safe way to travel while doing the job I love,” Linda says. Fast forward two years, and Linda has travelled across Australia, met incredible people and contributed meaningfully to the communities she’s served.

One placement that has left a lasting impression was Flinders Island, Tasmania. “It is so beautiful on the Island, a very relaxed lifestyle, the locals are so friendly… the Multi-Purpose Centre had such a great team spirit—everyone worked so well together. It was an absolute pleasure to be there.”

These kinds of experiences, where professional fulfilment meets personal enrichment, are at the heart of what makes locum life so unique.

Facing challenges with positivity

Of course, not every day is picture-perfect. But Linda approaches challenges with the same warmth she brings to her work.

“There have only been minor challenges with accommodation or travel, quickly sorted by speaking to or emailing my program officer.”

And when it comes to navigating less-than-cheerful environments?

“I go out of my way to stay positive, friendly and smile, it seems to work.”

Linda shares, “being a locum has made it possible to experience different cultures, like when I had a placement in Oak Valley SA, a small Indigenous community that has been very welcoming and a great experience.”

Linda’s advice for future locums

For anyone on the fence about becoming a locum, Linda’s message is clear: “It is the safest and most rewarding way to travel this beautiful country, meeting new people, gaining knowledge and so good for your wellbeing.”

Thinking of a change? With Rural LAP, every placement is an opportunity to grow, give back and explore Australia in a way few others get to.
