Rural LAP helps keep care flowing at Burra MPS

In South Australia’s mid-north, Burra is known for its rich mining history and warm rural community. But like many regional healthcare services, Burra Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) has long faced persistent staffing shortages. For Nurse Unit Manager Mary, turning to Rural LAP for support has been a practical and reliable solution.

Bridging the staffing gap

“Burra MPS has had critical staff shortages for many years,” says Mary. “We use agency nurses regularly to cover this. We try to cover leave using Rural LAP to take the pressure off the staff and the budget.”

The ability to bring in experienced, reliable nurses for leave coverage has proven to be more than a stopgap, it’s become an essential part of maintaining quality care.

Mary first heard about Rural LAP through other nurse unit managers and since then, she has seen firsthand the benefits of working with the program. “Rural LAP staff are very helpful with the application and quick to make contact once it’s submitted,” she explains.

Consistently high-quality nurses

One of the standout strengths of Rural LAP, according to Mary, is the quality of the locum nurses provided. “Burra has always had excellent staff from Rural LAP, both ENs and RNs. They are always happy to be here, experienced and capable nurses who work well in our team.”

This seamless integration into the local team means that any initial hesitation about bringing in locum support is quickly dispelled. “Our nursing team is well known to be welcoming and helpful to new staff. We’re always very glad to get some help,” Mary says.

Beyond just filling shifts, Rural LAP simplifies the logistics. “I would definitely recommend Rural LAP,” Mary says. “The nurses are terrific and as a bonus, Rural LAP arranges their accommodation and travel. That takes a lot off our plate.”
